Size
They are relatively thick-bodied, and are one of the smallest snake species in Bulgaria usually growing up to 60 cm (24 in) in total length (including tail), with an average of 55 cm.
Venom
The Common Adder is one of the three venomous snakes in Bulgaria. They are not regarded as especially dangerous as they are not that aggressive and will only bite when really provoked, stepped on, or picked up. You still don't want to get bitten though as it hurts a lot.
Habitat
They are extremely widespread and can be found throughout most of Western Europe and as far as East Asia. It is found in a variety of habitats, including: chalky downs, rocky hillsides, moors, sandy heaths, meadows, rough commons, edges of woods, sunny glades, bushy slopes,hedgerows, dumps and stone quarries.
Diet
They mainly feed on small mammals, such as mice, rats, voles, and shrews, as well as lizards. Sometimes, slow worms are taken, and even weasels and moles. They can also feed on amphibians, such as frogs, newts, and salamanders.
Breeding
Mating usually takes place in late April, females usually give birth to 3-18 snakes in August or September.
