Information
Rarity: Very common
Size
They are a small snake species only growing up to 60-75 cm long. Females usually grow larger then males.
Venom
It's a non-venomous species but a lot of people mistake them for adders and unfortunately they get killed by humans quite often. They say that they can bite, but I have never been bitten by one and I have caught over twenty of them.
Habitat
The smooth snake is dependent on well managed heath land, where it is mainly found in mature vegetation that provides good cover. On these sites it can use a range of habitats, from dry slopes to humid and wet heath areas. The smooth snake shares the slow-worm’s habit of hiding under stones, logs
and other debris exposed to the sun, rarely basking in the open.
Diet
They mainly feed on other reptiles such as lizards, but sometimes will eat rodents and invertebrates to. They are constrictors, meaning they squeeze the life out of there pray then swallow it.
Breeding
They emerge during March/April when males will start competing for females. Females don't lay eggs, they give birth to 4-12 live snakes.
